Cornerstone Roofing in Newick

Newick is a rural village east of Haywards Heath on the A272, set in the Low Weald toward the River Ouse and surrounded by big Wealden farms. Its heart is the village green, ringed by older cottages and period frontages, with post-war housing spreading out around it. Cornerstone Roofing has worked on roofs across Newick for 35+ years, from matched repairs on the older green-side property to tile work on the newer homes, and every job carries our 10-year insurance-backed warranty.

Our Roofing Services in Newick

We cover the full range of roofing across Newick: pitched and flat roofs, roof repairs, fascias and soffits, guttering, leadwork and chimney work. The older property around the green tends to carry clay tile and natural slate, while the post-war housing runs concrete tile, so a lot of local work is matched repair and re-cover. As a rural village among open farmland, plenty of these roofs also take real weather. Site visits to look over a roof are free and come with no obligation.

Replacement of an old and large Velux plus replacements of a few hanging tiles. Good communication, flexible on the timescale to link in with other contract work. The two man team 'gang' worked hard, very diligent, professional, cleaned up well afterwards and it looks very professional. I did feel the project was over priced but I needed it done, however invoiced as their estimate so it was my call to make.

Cornerstone provided a professional survey of our rather unusual shape garden room roof and came up with a quotation that seemed very reasonable for the work required which included removing 5x polycarbonate sheets on a sloping part of the roof, installing boarding and three layers of felt in their place plus re-felting a triangular flat portion of the roof to make a seamless felted roof. The gang arrived onsite ontime and worked really hard in the extreme heatwave. Plenty of tea and cold drinks supplied! The roof was completed ontime and looks very neat. I was particularly impressed with the 'above and beyond' attitude they applied to the job to make sure that it would provide good drainage in wet weather straight into the gutter. 25 year guarantee too!

I have tried to get a reliable roofing company to replace my house gutters and downpipes for several months. I finally spoke to Cornerstone Roofing a few weeks back. I can honestly say it was the best phone call I have made in several years. From start to finish Cornerstone were superb. Fantastic communication, site inspection, quote and completion of work. I very rarely write reviews because there is little exceptional to write about but Cornerstone deserves every one of the five stars I have given them on this review. They are honest, professional, competitive, give transparent advice and the work carried out was nothing short of perfect. If I ever require roofing work to be done in the future I have only one number to call and will have no hesitation in using Cornerstone as my first point of contact.

Cornerstone roofing removed a skylight, then boarded over the gap, and re boarded and felted our garage roof. I was really impressed with all the guys that did the job, they were efficient and friendly and really clean and tidy. The workmanship was really good. Would definitely recommend them! However, it did take ages to receive a quote and the admin side was not quite as efficient which was a shame but the work and roofers were great so would definitely use again. 5 stars! Thank you!

Pitched Roof Services in Newick

Almost every roof in Newick is pitched. The older houses around the green carry clay tile and natural slate, while the newer stock runs concrete interlocking tile, and the exposed rural plots see their share of wind-lifted and slipped tiles. Our pitched roof specialists spec each roof around its existing covering, and where original slate or handmade tile can be reclaimed we re-lay it on new battens with breathable underlay and fresh lead flashings.

Shingle

Shingles are an overlapping, single-thickness covering laid in courses across a sound deck. They depend on the underlay, the deck condition, and a ventilated batten cavity behind the visible covering. Get any of those wrong and the lifespan drops sharply.

Slate Roofing

Natural slate is a generational roof covering. Properly laid on fresh battens, with a breathable underlay and sound lead flashings, a slate roof will outlast most owners. We cover slate repairs, slate replacement, and full re-slate work across Mid Sussex.

Stone Roofing

Stone is a heavy traditional roof covering. The slates are graded by size and laid in diminishing courses (largest at the eaves, smallest at the ridge), which loads the supporting timbers significantly more than a tiled equivalent. Any stone-roofed enquiry calls for a structural survey of the deck and timbers before a quote.

Tile Roofing

Tile is the most common pitched covering across Sussex. Clay tile (handmade or machine-made) and concrete tile (interlocking or profile) both feature widely on the local stock. Tile lifespan is generally longer than the underlay beneath it, which means a roof can still look sound from the street while the underlay has reached the end of its life. We cover tile repairs, re-bedding of ridges, tile replacement, and full re-covers across Mid Sussex.

Flat Roof Services in Newick

Flat roofing in Newick is on the additions rather than the main roofs: rear extensions, garages, porches and the flat-roofed outbuildings that came with the post-war housing spreading out from the green. On roofs of that age there is one problem worth naming on its own, because it is the one that gets paid for twice.

Not all the water in a flat roof arrives from outside. Warm, moist air off a kitchen or a utility room rises into the roof build-up, meets the cold underside of the deck and condenses there. The insulation takes up water, the timber stays damp, and the ceiling below shows every sign of a leak. Recover the roof without dealing with that and the staining comes back, because the covering was never the thing at fault.

What points to condensation rather than a leak on a Newick flat roof:

  • Damp that is worse through the winter and eases off over the summer
  • Staining spread evenly across a ceiling rather than tracking from one point
  • Damp showing up in cold, dry weather when there has been no rain to speak of
  • Mould at the edges of a ceiling or around a light fitting
  • A roof that was recovered fairly recently and is wet again

The answer is ventilation through the build-up, or a rebuild that puts the insulation above the deck instead of below it, and the airflow at the eaves is part of that, which is why we look at the soffits and fascias alongside it. Our flat roof specialists work in EPDM, GRP, built-up felt, single-ply and liquid systems, and will say plainly when a roof does not need recovering at all.

Built-Up Felt Roofing

Modern reinforced multi-layer torch-on felt is a long way from the single-layer felt that gave the material its older reputation. Properly specified, with metal trims and drips at every edge, it gives a watertight finish well into 20-year territory. Felt remains the most economical like-for-like replacement for an existing felt flat roof.

EPDM Rubber

EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane sold by the roll and laid as a single sheet across most domestic flat roofs. One sheet means no overlaps and no welded joints to fail later. Lifespan comfortably reaches 25 years and beyond on a properly prepared deck.

Green Roof

Green roofs turn a flat surface into planting, additional thermal insulation, and drainage attenuation. They need a sound waterproof base underneath (typically EPDM or a bituminous build-up), proper drainage outlets, and a structural assessment of the supporting joists or deck because the loaded weight is significantly higher than a standard flat finish.

GRP / Fibreglass

GRP (glass-reinforced plastic, often called fibreglass roofing) is laid wet over a sound deck and cures into a single seamless skin. It’s strong enough to be walked on and available in a range of finishes. Lifespan typically reaches 25 years and beyond on a properly prepared substrate.

Liquid-Applied Membrane

Liquid coatings give a continuous, joint-free skin across complex roof details, including parapet cappings, roof-light or vent penetrations, and abutments where a flat meets a pitched tile. They can also be applied as a recoat over an existing failing membrane that’s otherwise structurally sound, which extends the roof’s life without a full strip-out. Most modern liquid systems are vapour-permeable and UV-stable.

Single Ply Membrane

Single-ply membrane comes as factory-made synthetic sheets, fixed mechanically, fully bonded, or held in place by ballast, with joints heat-welded on site. Long sheet widths reduce the number of seams on larger flat areas. Lifespan is comparable to EPDM when properly installed.

Why Choose Cornerstone Roofing for Flat Roof Work

Roof Repairs in Newick

The roof repairs we are called to most in Newick are slipped or cracked tiles, slate slip on the older cottages, worn lead around chimneys and valleys, and ridge tiles loosened by wind on the open farmland plots. We survey honestly before quoting, and while the timbers and battens are sound, targeted roof repair work is almost always better value than a re-cover. An active leak is made safe first to protect the inside, then a scheduled return for the proper fix, all under our 10-year insurance-backed warranty.

Cornerstone Roofing provide a wide range of specialised services, from high-quality installations of pitched roofs and flat roofs to expert leadwork, chimney repairs, guttering solutions, and more.

Other Services in Newick

Alongside main roof work we take care of leadwork (chimney flashings, valleys and parapet details), guttering renewal, fascia and soffit replacement, and chimney repointing or rebuilds. On the older green-side cottages the lead and chimneys are often the first things to need attention, and that is frequently what prompts a wider look at the roof. While the scaffold is up we will flag anything else worth doing, because bundling the work costs less than returning to it later.

About Newick

Newick is a rural village in the Low Weald, east of Haywards Heath on the A272, set among big Wealden farms on the western side of the River Ouse. Village life centres on its large green, framed by older cottages and period houses, with post-war housing spreading out around it. That mix of old and newer property, together with the open farmland surrounding the village, is much of why local roofs need the range of work they do.
