Every Cornerstone roofing project carries a 10-year insurance-backed warranty, alongside the relevant material guarantee from the manufacturer.
Reliable, high-quality work before, during, and after the scaffold comes down.
Hurstpierpoint sits at the foot of the South Downs and runs from a tight conservation area along the High Street out to the more open estate housing on College Lane, Western Road, and the modern development north and east of the village.
Cornerstone has worked on Hurstpierpoint roofs for 35+ years, covering everything from clay-tiled period cottages and Victorian villas through to the contemporary tile profiles on the newer estates. Every job is backed by our 10-year insurance-backed warranty.
We cover pitched and flat roofs, repairs, fascias and soffits, guttering, leadwork and chimneys across Hurstpierpoint and the surrounding villages. The roof stock here is mostly pitched: handmade clay tile, plain clay tile, and natural slate on the period property along the High Street, with concrete interlocking and concrete profile tile on the newer estates. We stock common profiles in colours that match the local Mid Sussex housing, and we’ll source salvage where the original spec is hard to find.

Replacement of an old and large Velux plus replacements of a few hanging tiles. Good communication, flexible on the timescale to link in with other contract work. The two man team 'gang' worked hard, very diligent, professional, cleaned up well afterwards and it looks very professional. I did feel the project was over priced but I needed it done, however invoiced as their estimate so it was my call to make.![]()

Cornerstone provided a professional survey of our rather unusual shape garden room roof and came up with a quotation that seemed very reasonable for the work required which included removing 5x polycarbonate sheets on a sloping part of the roof, installing boarding and three layers of felt in their place plus re-felting a triangular flat portion of the roof to make a seamless felted roof. The gang arrived onsite ontime and worked really hard in the extreme heatwave. Plenty of tea and cold drinks supplied! The roof was completed ontime and looks very neat. I was particularly impressed with the 'above and beyond' attitude they applied to the job to make sure that it would provide good drainage in wet weather straight into the gutter. 25 year guarantee too!![]()

I have tried to get a reliable roofing company to replace my house gutters and downpipes for several months. I finally spoke to Cornerstone Roofing a few weeks back. I can honestly say it was the best phone call I have made in several years. From start to finish Cornerstone were superb. Fantastic communication, site inspection, quote and completion of work. I very rarely write reviews because there is little exceptional to write about but Cornerstone deserves every one of the five stars I have given them on this review. They are honest, professional, competitive, give transparent advice and the work carried out was nothing short of perfect. If I ever require roofing work to be done in the future I have only one number to call and will have no hesitation in using Cornerstone as my first point of contact.![]()

Cornerstone roofing removed a skylight, then boarded over the gap, and re boarded and felted our garage roof. I was really impressed with all the guys that did the job, they were efficient and friendly and really clean and tidy. The workmanship was really good. Would definitely recommend them! However, it did take ages to receive a quote and the admin side was not quite as efficient which was a shame but the work and roofers were great so would definitely use again. 5 stars! Thank you!![]()

Great service, very professional from start to finish.
The pitched roofs in Hurstpierpoint break broadly into two camps. The conservation-area stock along the High Street and the older roads off it tends to be handmade clay peg tile, plain clay tile, or natural slate, with some hung-tile detailing on upper-floor walls. The estate housing beyond the village centre (College Lane, Western Road, the newer developments toward Hassocks) is largely concrete interlocking or modern concrete profile tile. Our pitched roof team works on both, and we’ll spec a job against the existing material rather than push for change.
Properties inside the Hurstpierpoint conservation area, or anything listed, will need planning or listed-building consent before work begins; that’s between the property owner and the local authority and isn’t something we handle on the roofer side.
Shingles are an overlapping, single-thickness covering laid in courses across a sound deck. They depend on the underlay, the deck condition, and a ventilated batten cavity behind the visible covering. Get any of those wrong and the lifespan drops sharply.
Natural slate is a generational roof covering. Properly laid on fresh battens, with a breathable underlay and sound lead flashings, a slate roof will outlast most owners. We cover slate repairs, slate replacement, and full re-slate work across Mid Sussex.
Stone is a heavy traditional roof covering. The slates are graded by size and laid in diminishing courses (largest at the eaves, smallest at the ridge), which loads the supporting timbers significantly more than a tiled equivalent. Any stone-roofed enquiry calls for a structural survey of the deck and timbers before a quote.
Tile is the most common pitched covering across Sussex. Clay tile (handmade or machine-made) and concrete tile (interlocking or profile) both feature widely on the local stock. Tile lifespan is generally longer than the underlay beneath it, which means a roof can still look sound from the street while the underlay has reached the end of its life. We cover tile repairs, re-bedding of ridges, tile replacement, and full re-covers across Mid Sussex.
Flat roofing in Hurstpierpoint is largely a story of rear extensions. Behind the High Street and across the newer closes on the edge of the village, a good deal of the added floor space sits under a flat roof rather than a pitched one, and much of it went on in the 1970s and 1980s under mineral felt. Felt of that age has given everything it has to give.
When the flat roof is also the ceiling of a kitchen or a back room, a failure is not a minor inconvenience and the damage lands inside the house. That is why we survey the deck and the falls before talking about coverings at all. Wet insulation, a soft deck, or an outlet that cannot clear will defeat a good membrane just as quickly as a poor one.
What decides the system on a Hurstpierpoint flat roof:
Our flat roof team fits EPDM, GRP, built-up felt, single-ply and liquid systems across Hurstpierpoint. Our guide to flat roof repair work in Sussex covers the repair side in more detail. Where a covering has failed in one place rather than everywhere, a flat roof repair is the cheaper and the more honest option, and every flat roof we lay carries our 10-year insurance-backed warranty.
Modern reinforced multi-layer torch-on felt is a long way from the single-layer felt that gave the material its older reputation. Properly specified, with metal trims and drips at every edge, it gives a watertight finish well into 20-year territory. Felt remains the most economical like-for-like replacement for an existing felt flat roof.
EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane sold by the roll and laid as a single sheet across most domestic flat roofs. One sheet means no overlaps and no welded joints to fail later. Lifespan comfortably reaches 25 years and beyond on a properly prepared deck.
Green roofs turn a flat surface into planting, additional thermal insulation, and drainage attenuation. They need a sound waterproof base underneath (typically EPDM or a bituminous build-up), proper drainage outlets, and a structural assessment of the supporting joists or deck because the loaded weight is significantly higher than a standard flat finish.
GRP (glass-reinforced plastic, often called fibreglass roofing) is laid wet over a sound deck and cures into a single seamless skin. It’s strong enough to be walked on and available in a range of finishes. Lifespan typically reaches 25 years and beyond on a properly prepared substrate.
Liquid coatings give a continuous, joint-free skin across complex roof details, including parapet cappings, roof-light or vent penetrations, and abutments where a flat meets a pitched tile. They can also be applied as a recoat over an existing failing membrane that’s otherwise structurally sound, which extends the roof’s life without a full strip-out. Most modern liquid systems are vapour-permeable and UV-stable.
Single-ply membrane comes as factory-made synthetic sheets, fixed mechanically, fully bonded, or held in place by ballast, with joints heat-welded on site. Long sheet widths reduce the number of seams on larger flat areas. Lifespan is comparable to EPDM when properly installed.
Common Hurstpierpoint repair situations include slipped or cracked tiles, lead flashings around chimneys and abutments, ridge tile failures on older bedded-mortar ridges, and felt extension roofs that have given out. We cover roof repair work across Hurstpierpoint, with every repair backed by our 10-year insurance-backed warranty.
A new roof in Hurstpierpoint is really two different jobs, and which one you have depends on where in the village you live. The older stock along the High Street and the roads immediately off it carries handmade clay peg tile, plain clay tile or natural slate. The estate housing on College Lane, Western Road and the newer developments beyond runs modern concrete profile tile. Replacing one has very little in common with replacing the other.
On the period stock the constraint is the finish. The replacement has to read as part of the same building once it is done, which means matching tile size, colour range and coursing, and working out how much of the existing covering can be sorted and reused before any new material is ordered. On the estate housing the constraint is almost always the underlay rather than the covering, and the work is a strip and re-cover with a modern breathable membrane.
Two kinds of Hurstpierpoint re-roof:
Where a covering has failed in one place rather than everywhere, targeted roof repairs are the better answer and we will tell you so. Where it has failed generally, a roof replacement is surveyed first and quoted in writing.
Beyond main roof work we handle fascias, soffits, and bargeboards, full guttering replacement and repair, leadwork (chimney flashings, valley details, dormer cheeks), and chimney repointing or rebuilds across Hurstpierpoint. Fascias, gutters, and chimney work share the same scaffold access, which lets multiple jobs run together.
Hurstpierpoint has a mix of conservation-area period property and modern estate housing. Cornerstone has been working in the village and across Mid Sussex for 35+ years, with a 10-year insurance-backed warranty on every job.
Hurstpierpoint is a Mid Sussex village with a population of around 7,000, sitting at the foot of the South Downs National Park. The High Street and surrounding lanes form a designated Conservation Area. Hurstpierpoint College, a long-established independent school, sits on Western Road. Wolstonbury Hill in the South Downs is within walking distance to the south, and the village retains a tight historic centre along the High Street.
